The Love story between the last Vicerine of India, Lady Ediwna Mountbatten and the first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru is not a secret. It is beleived they had an affair during their stay in india, and the pair might have re kindled their affair on the Ex-Prime ministers subsequent visits to England. Though the Mountbatten family denied it, Liaisons during the couple's open marriage have been admitted. IS THE AFFAIR ANY TRUE???
One of the first allegations was made made in Richard Hough's 1980 biography Mountbatten: Hero of Our Times(Source:Wikipedia). It was also confirmed they corresponded through letter. The letter has been read by both families.
I seriously don't give a flying fish if they made out or were in love. Whats more interesting are the letters itself. It is believed that Nehru sought the Vicerine's Advice on politics and governance.
So the political decisions made by Nehru been influenced by her views?
After looking further on the Internet i found some facts. In an interview with Karan Thapar, Pamela Mountbatten revealed her father used Nehru-Edwina relationship to confront some
tricky political situations. This is what she said:
"He (Lord Mountbatten) did use her (Edwina Mountbatten) in such ways. But he certainly wasn’t going to throw her, he didn’t say to her ‘go and become the Prime Minister’s (Nehru) lover, because I need you to intercede.’ It was a by-product of this deep affection.
”
When asked about the Nehrus decission to refer Kashmir Isssue to UN she Replied :
"I think it could have been. Because Panditji, being a Kashmiri, of course, inevitably the emotional side comes in from one’s own country, doesn’t it? And my father just in dry conversation might not have been able to get his viewpoint over, but with my mother translating it for Panditji and making, you know, appealing to his heart more than his mind that he should really behave like this. I think probably that did happen.”
The above facts makes me feel that the love affair between Nehru and Edwina might have influenced the political decissons made by the 1st Prime minister of India. Could our history
been have better if the affair never existed?
WE WOULD NEVER KNOW WOULD WE? !!!!
